instruments

The Guitar is a string instrument of the chordophone family constructed from wood and strung with either nylon or steel strings. The modern guitar was preceded by the lute, vihuela, four-course renaissance guitar and five-course baroque guitar, all of which contributed to the development of the modern six-string instrument.

Lute can refer generally to any string instrument having the strings running in a plane parallel to the sound table, more specifically to any plucked string instrument with a neck (either fretted or unfretted) and a deep round back. The European lute is used in a great variety of instrumental music from the Medieval to the late Baroque eras and is an important instrument for Renaissance secular music.

Vihuela is a guitar-shaped string instrument from 15th and 16th century Spain, Portugal and Italy, usually with six doubled strings.
